Labour will no longer support keeping the Universal Credit system of benefits, and says it will “have to go”.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell told Sky News he has been listening to the experiences of people on the system and now believes it cannot be reformed.

Universal Credit aimed to replace six previously available means-tested benefits with one single payment but has run into a series of problems with critics saying it leaves claimants worse off.

Calling it a “shambles”, Mr McDonnell told Sky’s Sophy Ridge: “I think most people now are coming to the conclusion Universal Credit has got to be scrapped.
